Manga Review: The Bugle Call - Song of War

    The Bugle Call Vol. 1

What do you get when you mix music, fantasy, and warfare? The Bugle Call: Song of War! This 2022 manga, still running strong in Jump SQ, gets an English-language release early this month from Viz Manga. Meet Luca, discover his unique ability, and read on as ancient technology enters the battlefield!

    Luca's Music

    A new instrument!

The Bugle Call: Song of War stars Luca, a young man abandoned by his parents. This was, most people assume, due to the strange horn-like growth protruding from his skull. He works as a bugler, guiding armies into battle from far behind the front lines. But he has another ability: he can, apparently, "see" music.

During one battle, Luca's talents blossom, and now everyone can see his music! This talent marks him as one of the Branch-hexed. And when a mysterious individual simply called the Pontiff discovers him, everything changes.

    Magic on the Battlefield

    A grid from above

In its first three chapters, The Bugle Call: Song of War introduces a magical, mysterious world. The Branch-hexed wield powers aided by ancient technology. That technology hails from strange Spires, which Luca is now tasked with protecting. What all this means, and where everything started, is yet to be revealed. But in three chapters alone, the world of this series already draws the reader in.

Luca, too, is a relatable and likable character. He sees very little good in the world save for his music. And, when he's presented with his new role, he has stipulations. Once his role is done—once he's taken out a very specific target—he gets to leave war behind forever and become a Maestro. Fortunately, the Pontiff seems more than all right with these conditions. So, what's next for Luca?

    The Joy of Music

    Luca plays

At first glance, The Bugle Call: Song of War seems strangely dire. Luca watches people die around him every day, and he's tired. Music is the only beautiful thing in his world. But now he can pursue it. Freedom is, if not immediate, at least within reach. Moreover, he's discovered that what makes him "strange" actually ties him to more people than he realized.

This surprisingly inspirational and hopeful story, coupled with gorgeous art, makes for a delightful new read. And it's a manga full of mysteries waiting to be unraveled. What are the Branch-hexed really? Who created this ancient technology? And what's with the Pontiff's head, anyway? All secrets that will, perhaps, be revealed eventually.

The Bugle Call: Song of War Vol. 1 goes on sale June 3.
